Your Google Business Profile is one of the most powerful free tools a contractor has for getting found — but most contractors barely use it.
A Half-Filled Profile Costs You Jobs
When a homeowner lands on your page and it’s half-done, you make it difficult for them to build trust. What do you expect them to think? They move on to the next contractor without you ever knowing why. You’re stuck in a cycle, never knowing how many jobs passed you by.
Your first impression is everything to a potential client. It decides whether you’re even in the running.
The Fields Most Contractors Skip
You probably filled most of this out already, but that’s the problem: you set it up once, generically, and never came back to it. These are the fields that quietly cost you work when they’re half-done.
Primary Category
Your Primary Category determines your search relevance and your main line of work. Pick the wrong category and the kitchen jobs you want go to the guy down the street while you get calls to fix fences.
Secondary Categories
You only pop up for the categories you actually list. Every kind of work you do but didn’t list stays invisible, so when someone searches “bathroom remodel near me,” that job goes to someone else.
Service Area
Your service area defines your geographic visibility. Set the wrong service area and a homeowner in two cities over never sees you, even though you’d gladly drive there for the work.
Contact Info
The obvious one of the bunch, but it’s the most painful to get wrong. This isn’t a homeowner who never found you. It’s one who found you, wanted you, reached for the phone, and hit a wrong number. So they call the next guy.
None of these take long to fix, but left wrong, they decide which jobs ever reach you.
Photos, Categories, And Services That Move Rankings
These are what push you up the rankings and get you picked. Your photos show your work and drive a click or call from a potential customer. You can consistently display your work and show the work you want to do. Put your best work up. The customer will pick the profile with plenty of beautiful, clear photos over the profile with blurry or no photos.
The services list carries a heavy ranking signal on a profile that is checked against your website by Google. This is a field people can easily leave blank, so filling it out gives you a jump ahead of other contractors in your area. Low effort but high return. Seems obvious but easy to ignore.
Keeping Your Google Business Profile Active
Regular posts tell Google you’re active and will keep you visible. Your active profile stays at the top and a stale profile drops. Give yourself a max of 30 days in between posts and focus on putting up weekly posts and monthly photos. This is an excellent way to support and maintain your ranking and prevent your profile from falling to a lower rank. This can also work as a trust indicator with a homeowner when they land on your page and notice you’re different from the other contractor who hasn’t posted for a year.
